This week I threw myself into the book "Evidence" by Jonathan Kellerman, which is the latest Alex Deleware novel. Alex Deleware is a character who is a child psychologist...an independently wealthy one who works whenever he feels like it and helps his best friend Milo Sturgis - a homicide detective - whenever Milo asks. Milo is an openly gay detective partnered with a doctor (very romantic) and because of this nearly lost his job until L.A. got a new commisionner who was more concerened with results. Now Milo comfortably tackles the difficult cases and cold cases that he chooses.
So in this novel there's a new murder, a couple found in an abandoned construction site. They were found by the part time security guard. This crime takes Milo and Alex back nearly 15 years in the past to the victim's high school days. There is international intrigue, balancing working with the feds to keeping them out of the loop. Alex is mostly along for the ride, but serves as a great sounding board for Milo and also does research to help the case along.
I didn't figure it out until just before they did, so it will keep you guessing. I will admit the writing does get cheesy when Mr. Kellerman tries to have the characters make witty comments at the close of a segment. But I truly love these characters, and Milo has such a dry sense of humor that I still enjoy just seeing them again.
Let me also mention that I generally hate mysteries. The ones that are so cheesy and follow a mathematical formula of how to write a mystery...you know what I mean...Mr. Kellerman is not like that. He has his cheesy moments, but for the most part is an excellant writer. And if you try it and like it, stop by and give his wife Faye Kellerman a try. And turns out, 2 of their kids are writers too - Jesse Kellerman and Aliza Kellerman.
