Review - What the Night Knows

by: Dean Koontz

Available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

In the late summer of a long ago year, a killer arrived in a small city. His name was Alton Turner Blackwood, and in the space of a few months he brutally murdered four families. His savage spree ended only when he himself was killed by the last survivor of the last family, a fourteen-year-old boy.

Half a continent away and two decades later, someone is murdering families again, recreating in detail Blackwood’s crimes. Homicide detective John Calvino is certain that his own family—his wife and three children—will be targets in the fourth crime, just as his parents and sisters were victims on that distant night when he was fourteen and killed their slayer.

As a detective, John is a man of reason who deals in cold facts. But an extraordinary experience convinces him that sometimes death is not a one-way journey, that sometimes the dead return.

Here is ghost story like no other you have read. In the Calvinos, Dean Koontz brings to life a family that might be your own, in a war for their survival against an adversary more malevolent than any he has yet created, with their own home the battleground. Of all his acclaimed novels, none exceeds What the Night Knows in power, in chilling suspense, and in sheer mesmerizing storytelling.

The cover is haunting, in fact I would name this his best cover yet. The raven flying over the moon. It has meaning in the story as well, the serial killer Alton Turner Blackwood thinks the raven is his...well basically totem animal. He thinks it is the Raven that helped him find the information that led him to become Death. Yes, he thinks he is Death with a capital "D".

John is a homicide detective now, 20 years after finding his family brutally murdered and killing the murderer himself. His wife is an artist, they have 3 great kids that they homeschool and are living a happy life. Then a murder happens that is exactly like the one that started it all 20 years ago. Blackwood is back, and unstoppable. After all, how do you stop a ghost that can jump into people and buildings at his discretion.

The story starts out strong, and the interjected journal writings of Blackwood are mesmerizing. It slows down a bit in the middle, but it picks right back up. I went through half this novel in one evening and I couldn't believe I was done!

If you enjoy thrillers or mysteries you will enjoy this book. I'm going to give this 3 and a half stars because of the slow down in the middle. Still a great story and a fun ride.

BTW - I went back to the blogger comments. There are features of the IntenseDebate that I like, but it wasn't showing up all the time and making it too hard for people to comment. No one wants to hunt down the place to do that - so back to the basics for now. Thanks for your patience while I explore. :-D

Guest Post by Bert Murray

First, I want to thank Angela Holtz for allowing me to write this guest blog! I enjoy reading Angela's reviews.

I am writing this author guest post at a beautiful beach in Long Island, New York. It is ninety degrees with bright sunshine but there is a cool breeze blowing in as well.

I'm obsessed by the ocean. I love to watch the waves as they roll in and crash against the sand. I'm thinking about my novel, Colin Preston Rocked And Rolled as I stare out at the water. Most of all I wanted that novel to show what it is like for a guy to fall in love.

Colin Preston Rocked And Rolled is about that important moment in a young man's life when he feels the powerful surge of emotion for a girl that goes beyond lust and can only be called - love.

For a guy, who has never felt it before, falling in love, can be overwhelming. It can make everything else in life seem unimportant. It is a shock to the system.

I'm staring out at the ocean again. I feel the soft sand between my toes and fingers. July is my favorite month of the year.

I was searching for a way to have Colin Preston, my main character, express his feelings as he was falling in love. I thought about my own life and came up with an idea: classic rock.

I decided to have Colin be a huge Beatles and John Lennon fan. The amazing music of the Beatles seemed to me up to the task of expressing the turbulent emotions Colin was experiencing. Beatles songs say it all for Colin. His life experience and the songs become one.

I'm closing my eyes and breathing in the salt air. I love this beach!
I hope you decide to make Colin Preston Rocked And Rolled your summer "beach read".

Review - Colin Preston Rocked and Rolled

By: Bert Murray

Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Synopsis:
Meet Colin Preston. 19 years old and a student at Elerby University in upstate New York.

He drinks too much. Lives for the Beatles, John Lennon and classic rock.

Falls for the most beautiful sophomore on campus.

His life is about to change forever.

Funny. Moving. Honest. Raw.

An entertaining coming of age novel about friendship, music, first love and betrayal.

The cover is brilliant. I don't think the characters are as HOT as described in the book but then again I'm 36 and not 19. It is colorful and eye catching. I had a hard time avoiding this book that I received from the author thru Goodreads. (Why was I avoiding it you ask? Because I have an ever growing list of books to review!)

The main character annoyed the living hell out of me. He whined a lot, and kept making choices that were making his life worse. Jasmine, the girl he obsessed over, was completely self-centered and mean. I hated that he kept wanting her, missing the good that was right in front of him. Ahhhh, young love.

Through his own pain he finds friends he never thought he would find. Mrs. Vesquez, a visiting professor from Spain, and Chester, a pot-head he met in the basement of his dorm.

Colin has a rocky relationship with his dad, an unhealthy obsession with the Beatles...but that was the one thing I actually liked about him. I could catch all the Beatles references.

Now I know you are thinking, "great - she hated this book." No, actually I really enjoyed it. Even though the main character got on my nerves I still held out hope that he'd pull his head out of his *ahem* a**. He's a very likable guy and that's why you will feel all that frustration as you read his story. The novel has such a smooth flow that I read it in a few hours.

I just saw the kindle edition is only $0.99 - so that's not a bad gamble, is it? I love all these cheap books. Unfortunately I did not see this for the Nook.

This is Bert Murray's 1st novel, you can visit his website here - www.colinprestonrockedandrolled.com/
